Inventing outrageous stories to attract attention and/or sell advertising is not harmless. Serious consequences are possible. First, people believe them and spread them around until “everyone knows” something that isn’t true. Or worse, people with people with the power to do something, like voting or using nuclear weapons, might believe them. Almost as bad, the desire to prevent such disasters might lead to governmental controls on expression, which can be abused to suppress legitimate dissent.
So PLEASE don’t post unless you KNOW it’s true.

Putting the word “satire” or “entertainment” in fine print at the end of a pack of lies should not exempt the publisher from a libel suit. Nor from prosecution for causing serious problems.
